The other day I saw a poster for a music gig entitled 'Back to old school, 90's' and was like WTF? 90's is old school? I guess it was two decades ago but for me it's a stretch. I think of old school as being near the beginning of something, the driving force, part of the groundswell that establishes something as a genre or icon in it's own right. I'm talking Grandmaster Flash, Dogtown and Z boys, Nike Air Force 1's, the Commodore 64 and Ultima.
Ultima is proper old school. Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness was released in 1981 and followed by over a dozen sequels and spin offs to become the longest running RPG franchise.
The latest incarnation has taken Britannia online in Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar. Journey back to Britannia, accept the challenge from Lady British and save the land. Play as a Fighter or Mage, solo or with friends and become the Avatar!
The beta is now open, you can sign up for the Ultima Forever b3ta here.
