There can be as many beta testing phases as required to get a piece of software to a point it’s ready for launch. Often beta tests are further split into closed beta – a restricted invitation only group, and open beta – generally a larger group where anyone who is interested can sign up.
Beta testing normally involves promoting registrations for the product on a free trial basis. Often the first round of beta testing is offered to existing subscribers to a previous version of a product or other product from the same company.
The main objectives of beta testing are to iron out bugs, test the stability of the software and servers and get feedback on potential improvements.
