When I came across Otherland it blew my mind, big time. If you've read the series of novels of the same name by best-selling author Tad Williams, you'll have an inkling of the scope and ambition of turning Otherworld into an MMO. If not, I'll do my best to give a flavour of what Otherland is about, you can try watching the gameplay trailer below, though I expect if you haven't read the books, it will leave you thinking WTF?
Otherland is a free to play MMORPG with not just an enormous world but a universe consisting of multiple virtual worlds. From cyber-punk cities to medieval castle, each world has it's own unique style and setting.
You begin the game by selecting a body and one of the two currently available classes. You can get pretty crazy with the style of your character but right now there are only two classes - Rage (melee) and Gunner (firearms). You can follow the main storyline as well as side quests and mini game areas. Most areas are safe zones but there is also PVP on offer. Otherland uses a non-targeting action combat system with graphics delivered by the Unreal Engine 3.
The Otherland universe is built using eDNA, which can be "looted from everyone and used to create everything". This allows you to re-create the clothes and weapons from a defeated enemy, though you'll need the code to be able to recreate it. Players will be able to use eDNA to make their own mini-worlds to use as a home base and it looks like these will be the battleground for clan PVP.
Hopefully that's cleared things up but I suspect you'll just need to experience Otherland to really get a handle on it. The quality of this game far surpasses other free-to-play offerings out there and I'm looking forward to seeing it do well and take F2P to the next level.
Otherland is currently in closed beta, you can register for a beta invite on the official site
